My birthday last year coincided with what was celebrated (in the USA) as ‘Mothers Day’. So, because I am the first born, that day was also the 62 anniversary of my mother becoming a mum. Typically, in my chat with her that day, there was no mention of ‘Mothers Day’. Why?

For me, everyday of my life so far has been Mothers Day, and, as we say farewell and au revoir to her today, because of all she was and will continue to be; because of all the lessons she taught me; because I have never doubted her love for me; because her commitment to my welfare and wellbeing never wavered; because she always made me so proud of her; because she always inspired me… because of the memories that will carry me till I meet her again, it will still be for me that every day is Mothers Day.

As I grew up, and after I had grown up, Mummy seized every opportunity to tell me that “what man has done, man can do.” With the help of those words and many other gems she threw at my siblings and me, she moulded us into what we are today.

Laying Mummy to rest today will challenge us, but it will not break us. After all, we know so many have done what we will do today, and we will do so hearing our beloved Mammy Kaymei reminding us that “what man has done, man can do.”

Au revoir Mammy Kaymei…
