In the drivel are statistics and interpretations of them that leave little doubt they believe and place hope in the concept of the “Three Bs” – that “Bullshit Baffles Brains”.
The aim is almost always to avoid responsibility for failures and claim successes – even if not theirs. The rejection of realities that don’t match their fantasies means missing opportunities to educate themselves and becoming better positioned or enabled to achieve promises made. In the end, credibility is almost limited to the thinking that “an unsophisticated forecaster uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts – for support rather than illumination” (Anon).
Some of us have more recently had to endure over one hundred and twenty paragraphs built on statistics and narratives we are unable to recognise or verify. Proof, if proof is needed, that “there are lies, damn lies and statistics” (Anon).
