A line from Bob Marley’s ‘Crazy Baldhead’ – “Here comes the con man coming with his con plan”. Well here goes…
The UK had a general election three year early because the Prime Minister wanted to “strengthen my hand”. To my simple mind, she wanted those less likely to agree with her to become much less of a bother to her. The opposition to her government was probably supposed to become as close to not worthy of consideration as she took strides towards becoming the “strong and stable” leaders all the evidence suggests she is incapable of becoming.
Critical to Mrs May’s ambitions was the collective decision of the electorate which we now know she catastrophically misjudged. Now we are getting a new assault on the concept of opposition – sweet talk or smart talk the opposition into working with you. Where was this love for cross party collaboration when the decision was taken to call a general election it was hoped will crush them?
I am no fan of Jeremy Corbyn, and I don’t see that changing in this lifetime, but he is supposed to be the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. His duty is to constructively lead opposition to the government; not to help deliver a sort of de facto one party state which I suspect it was hoped we were going to ‘opt for’ in June.
We have told you, by our votes, that we don’t want you to have that ‘strong hand’ you obviously crave. It could be because we are fearful of what you will do with it or just because we don’t believe you are worthy of it.
